CR Exercise 4.3 Beginnings

My topic is on Cesarean Sections I plan on educating my audience on what it is, who is at risk for one, what risks are involved, also I am going to talk about why they have become so popular choice for doctors and patients alike.

1.What exactly is a cesarean? The risks? Why is it such a popular option today? What happens afterward? What makes is so different than a vaginal delivery? What is the story behind the sterile curtain?
Its 10:38 at night and the day has been long, after arriving at the hospital at 5:30 that morning I was admitted in the for a scheduled induction. With much anticipation for my new arrival I have looked forward to this day for a long hard nine months. Recently I had been diagnosed with gall bladder stones which had been quite painful. With an induction I would be able to have a surgery that would take out my gall bladder thus ending my pain a little faster. Now sitting in the uncomfortable hospital bed my doctor is giving me very few options.

2. In the early days of the C-section most were performed on only pregnant women who had died or were dying and the baby would be cut out of them. In more recent times the mother doesn’t have to be dying in order to save the baby in a labor that goes bad, however the mortality rate was still relativity high and they were dreaded because there was no anesthesia being used at the time.
With a lower mortality rate and the added anesthesia and antiseptics today, c-sections are a very popular way of delivering a baby in fact one in every three babies are delivered via c-section.

3. A cesarean section is a major abdominal surgery and should not be taken lightly. Today cesareans are a very popular method of delivery, in fact about every one in three babies are born via cesarean.

Personally I think I will be using the first one because I think it will capture the audience better than listing a bunch of fact right off the bat.

When I first thought about thinking about c-sections as a subject for research I was pregnant and of course always was thinking about things that could go wrong. I didn't know anything really about c sections and was actually quit fearful of it all the doctors that I went to like to steer clear of them so that added to my fear. I only knew that they made a cut in your belly and removed the baby from there. As I continued to think about it I noticed that c-sections are actually quite the popular way today and a lot of women were having them now a days so why was I so scared about the off chance of having one myself I suppose it was because I didn't know much about it. So as I started to research it I assumed that there was danger to the baby and thats why my own doctor didn't want to head in that direction. To my amazement most of the risk is to the mother so I started to research that and if there was so much risk for the mother why is it such a popular thing and why did doctors jump to a c section so quickly what made a women a candidate for it was I a huge risk for getting on after all?

Moments, Stories, People, and Scenes.

Of course my own experiences jumps out in my mind where I have been close twice in the delivery room the first was with my first born his head was so big and the doctors were starting to prepare me to go to get a c-section if the vacuum didn't work fortunately it did. The second was where my labor wouldn't start and then it didn't progress like the doctors wanted and I felt pressured to make a decision which inevitably would lead to the OR for one There are a couple stories I have read which don't stand out as clearly, this one women ended up having a emergency c-sec with her first child and so desperately wanted to deliver vaginally with her second but had a lot of trouble finding a doctor that would support her in that decision. A thing that sticks out in the interview was women were electing to have c-sections as to preserve their pelvic floors also a story about a women whose labor was not progressing and the doctors ruptured her membranes only to find the umbilical cord had came out before the head she was rushed to the OR for a c-section and she was an elective inducement the nurse said it could have been avoided it they had just waited to induce her a little longer. An answer from the interview was from the doctor she stated sh wouldn't want to be doing a c-section on a woman who had four already so after a certain umber the doctors that were so eager and quick to cut become hesitant.

Whats your opinion on C-sections?

I think that they are overly done and that people don't know enough about the risks involved.

What are the risks involved? Isn't it a simple procedure?

There are a lot of risks involved lets say the baby has made it to 39 weeks before the mom undergoes a c-section which happens to be a major abdominal surgery. The baby will be ok unless she develops TTN which is avoided when the baby's chest is squeezed through the birth canal. The risks to the mom are very high blood loss infection to the incision site, damage to the other organs, uterine rupture in pregnancies there after....

Wow who would want to go through all that? Why wouldn't a women be able to give birth naturally?

Not all c-sections are wanted, but sometimes they are needed. Luckily today because of this procedure women who have complications aren't doomed. Babies that are breech, multiple babies, women with herpes, or women with diabetes....

So What

People should understand what a cesarean section is, who is at risk, and what the risks are.

Proposal 2

As my research paper starts to come together I find that my focus becoming clearer. I want to educate people like myself who come face to face with a decision to make in the delivery room or even before. Personally I found that doctors really don't give you the consequences when you are faced with a decision of how you want your labor and delivery to progress.

I have come across a lot of information but I have been finding it quite hard to find new and fresh ideas. All the articles basically say the same thing in different words. So I find myself repeating myself in my note taking.

I have learned alot in this project and find myself having more of an opinion in my subject. I am aiming my paper at an audience of women or men who don't know much about the subject and would like to know more about Cesareans which is becoming a more and more popular method of delivering. I do plan on having it be pretty objective but might lean toward the more traditional vaginal delivery
