CR Exercise 4.3 Beginnings

My topic is on Cesarean Sections I plan on educating my audience on what it is, who is at risk for one, what risks are involved, also I am going to talk about why they have become so popular choice for doctors and patients alike.

1.What exactly is a cesarean? The risks? Why is it such a popular option today? What happens afterward? What makes is so different than a vaginal delivery? What is the story behind the sterile curtain?
Its 10:38 at night and the day has been long, after arriving at the hospital at 5:30 that morning I was admitted in the for a scheduled induction. With much anticipation for my new arrival I have looked forward to this day for a long hard nine months. Recently I had been diagnosed with gall bladder stones which had been quite painful. With an induction I would be able to have a surgery that would take out my gall bladder thus ending my pain a little faster. Now sitting in the uncomfortable hospital bed my doctor is giving me very few options.

2. In the early days of the C-section most were performed on only pregnant women who had died or were dying and the baby would be cut out of them. In more recent times the mother doesn’t have to be dying in order to save the baby in a labor that goes bad, however the mortality rate was still relativity high and they were dreaded because there was no anesthesia being used at the time.
With a lower mortality rate and the added anesthesia and antiseptics today, c-sections are a very popular way of delivering a baby in fact one in every three babies are delivered via c-section.

3. A cesarean section is a major abdominal surgery and should not be taken lightly. Today cesareans are a very popular method of delivery, in fact about every one in three babies are born via cesarean.

Personally I think I will be using the first one because I think it will capture the audience better than listing a bunch of fact right off the bat.

When I first thought about thinking about c-sections as a subject for research I was pregnant and of course always was thinking about things that could go wrong. I didn't know anything really about c sections and was actually quit fearful of it all the doctors that I went to like to steer clear of them so that added to my fear. I only knew that they made a cut in your belly and removed the baby from there. As I continued to think about it I noticed that c-sections are actually quite the popular way today and a lot of women were having them now a days so why was I so scared about the off chance of having one myself I suppose it was because I didn't know much about it. So as I started to research it I assumed that there was danger to the baby and thats why my own doctor didn't want to head in that direction. To my amazement most of the risk is to the mother so I started to research that and if there was so much risk for the mother why is it such a popular thing and why did doctors jump to a c section so quickly what made a women a candidate for it was I a huge risk for getting on after all?

Moments, Stories, People, and Scenes.

Of course my own experiences jumps out in my mind where I have been close twice in the delivery room the first was with my first born his head was so big and the doctors were starting to prepare me to go to get a c-section if the vacuum didn't work fortunately it did. The second was where my labor wouldn't start and then it didn't progress like the doctors wanted and I felt pressured to make a decision which inevitably would lead to the OR for one There are a couple stories I have read which don't stand out as clearly, this one women ended up having a emergency c-sec with her first child and so desperately wanted to deliver vaginally with her second but had a lot of trouble finding a doctor that would support her in that decision. A thing that sticks out in the interview was women were electing to have c-sections as to preserve their pelvic floors also a story about a women whose labor was not progressing and the doctors ruptured her membranes only to find the umbilical cord had came out before the head she was rushed to the OR for a c-section and she was an elective inducement the nurse said it could have been avoided it they had just waited to induce her a little longer. An answer from the interview was from the doctor she stated sh wouldn't want to be doing a c-section on a woman who had four already so after a certain umber the doctors that were so eager and quick to cut become hesitant.

Whats your opinion on C-sections?

I think that they are overly done and that people don't know enough about the risks involved.

What are the risks involved? Isn't it a simple procedure?

There are a lot of risks involved lets say the baby has made it to 39 weeks before the mom undergoes a c-section which happens to be a major abdominal surgery. The baby will be ok unless she develops TTN which is avoided when the baby's chest is squeezed through the birth canal. The risks to the mom are very high blood loss infection to the incision site, damage to the other organs, uterine rupture in pregnancies there after....

Wow who would want to go through all that? Why wouldn't a women be able to give birth naturally?

Not all c-sections are wanted, but sometimes they are needed. Luckily today because of this procedure women who have complications aren't doomed. Babies that are breech, multiple babies, women with herpes, or women with diabetes....

People should understand what a cesarean section is, who is at risk, and what the risks are.

As my research paper starts to come together I find that my focus becoming clearer. I want to educate people like myself who come face to face with a decision to make in the delivery room or even before. Personally I found that doctors really don't give you the consequences when you are faced with a decision of how you want your labor and delivery to progress.

I have come across a lot of information but I have been finding it quite hard to find new and fresh ideas. All the articles basically say the same thing in different words. So I find myself repeating myself in my note taking.

I have learned alot in this project and find myself having more of an opinion in my subject. I am aiming my paper at an audience of women or men who don't know much about the subject and would like to know more about Cesareans which is becoming a more and more popular method of delivering. I do plan on having it be pretty objective but might lean toward the more traditional vaginal delivery

1. Today we’ve seen a rise in the number of c-sections, particularly within the U.S. In your professional opinion what do you attribute the increase to?

2. What is your opinion on VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section)? Are VBAC’s a procedure you would feel comfortable with? If not, what is your reasoning.


3. What are some of the most critical risks and side effects that come to your mind when performing a c-section?

Wk 7 CR Exercise 1.8 Ways of Reading to Write

1. The most important thing about reading for a research paper is to be able to discern through the information that is being read.

2. I think the purpose the the scene was to capture the readers interest which it did a very good job at. It used a lot of imagery which helped and it was a very dramatic beginning which captured my interest. It set the scene very well with a hot summer in Georgia, I felt the heat just by reading "The grass scorched and withered in the fields, and bare patches of red clay earth began to appear and to crack and cake in the sun like the bottoms of dried up lakes.""...the heat droned and shimmered in the fields, and the locusts sprang..." I felt the strong since of friendship with the five boys and as they went to play in the river. The sense of danger arouse when the author said that the river "roiled when he hit" and then the pain that the kid went through as he made his way to the shore. He had loyalty towards his friends so that they did not suffer the same fate as he when he warned them not to jump. The other boys I sensed were scared when they saw their buddy in pain and die. I think this dramatic beginning is central to the rest of the story because it showed a very traumatic event in the boys lives that had an impact on them which might lead to how they feel are behave later in the story.

3.The main idea in this passage is identity formation it reads that a child needs to find their identity and this is one of the biggest challenges. Ones identity is often changed based on new experiences and things that happen to them. There are some peoples identity that doesn't change because they avoid experiences and new things.

4. I did approach the passages differently because the first one was identified as a novel and the second was an article and I found myself having to read the article a couple of times before I was able to write anything on it. I was easily captured by the passage from the novel because it read like a book.
When I read a book I tend to get more into it and am able to soak more knowledge and not skip around. Informational articles I have to read over a couple of times because I skip around a lot. So I did use my typical reading strategies.
My behaviors when reading text and articles I read them first and might make a mark with a pencil when I think I find something important than I go back and highlight or underline things that I might want to use. If its on the computer I will bookmark the page and I might copy and paste something relevant to the word pad, or I have printed out things to highlight info as well. It does vary on the excerpt mostly depending on where I am at and where I got it from.
I would like to think that I did take my advice based on the question. I tried to discern through the information to find the main ideas in the article, as for the novels passage there was quite a bit of information that I could pick and choose from so it is mostly based on my own opinion.
The only problems I ran into when reading these passages was the article really i found it very boring after reading something so alive and cleverly written I had to read the article several times. The first time I read it I actually didn't realize that I had read it and did not retain anything. And then I read the question and about there being two different passages and then went back to find it. So I read what I was supposed to do for that passage again then with that in mind I read the article again and than again so I was able to do the summery.

• Argue

My tentative main claim is that Doctors might be pursuing c-sections for their own benefits rather than the mothers. I believe that there are risk factors involved with a cesarean that are not being revealed to patients as well as they could be vs the risk factors for vaginal deliveries. I also believe that doctors might be reasoning with the patients to elect to have one so that there is a less of a chance for something to go wrong that might bring a lawsuit. Also I believe that by having a c-section the doctor gains control rather than the patient having control.

• Analyze

The theory that I am testing is that more cesareans take place than have to.

3. I never really thought twice about people having cesareans until I started to watch a lot of birthing shows on TV. I have always assumed that women had them because something was wrong with the baby or there was some type of a medical emergency that required the baby to be removed from the mother. After watching so many shows that ended in a c-section and being pregnant myself I began to wonder why there was such an increase in c-sections. Some of the women on the shows didn't appear to need them yet still received them. Now more than ever I believe that something is up after I went in for an elective inducement (for medical reasons) and the doctor kept pressuring me to rupture my water, even though I had only dilated one centimeter over the course of 24 hrs, and the chance of me having a successful vaginal delivery became very slim. After that experience and doing a little research asking the nurses at the hospital and a looking on the web, my prejudice's seem to be justified.

I first got interested in this subject when I began to watch alot of birthing shows on discovery. My son beleives that the doctor is going to cut the baby out of mommys tummy like the doctor on the shows do. I heard that c-sections are every one in five nowadays and am fasinated by something that was so frowned upon growing up and considered so dangerous is so popular today. I have a step sis who has had three c-sec already the latter two being elective. My doctor frowns upon it and will only do it if necessary.

Why is there such an increase in c-sections?

In the article “Google Zooms In Too Close for Some” it introduces a product on Google Earth called street view. Street view collects photos that show what a person might see it looking from the street. The articles main focus is on the negative perspective that people have with the product. There are people that find that it intrudes on their privacy, and it many examples of people caught doing things less than desirable for public view. With the introduction of the product people are on the search to find photos and submit them to a blog in a contest for “Best Urban Images”. Google has offered to delete images if requested.
I do not think I will necessary base a lot of my research on this article as it is mainly focused on one tiny part of Google Earth. Also it only gives a one sided opinion of the product which is negative. I will however keep it in mind and might throw it in to prove some of the turn offs. Peoples opinions are very important for this product to be successful. So I would find this article reliable in some of its context.

Steven Musil wrote and article on Cnet called “On the go with Google”. In the beginning of the article it explains the upgrade that Google Earth has came out with recently. Regular Joes can view Mars just like the scientists from Nasa, but with all the comforts their home computer provides. Nasa and Google have teamed up together to provide more information on oceans and then back up to the stars. A cool new feature that I checked out myself was the historical maps. Google also just a product called latitude which helps people locate and track others making the electronic leash shorter and the world a bit smaller. They worked on the privacy issue connected with this by having it password protection. The rest of the article in my opinion, is pretty irrelevant to Google Earth it self. This would be a good article to have handy when introducing the new features but not alone as it mainly talks about a few of the features very briefly. I also didn’t like it going way off into other subjects that really didn’t pertain to the title. I will most likely wouldn’t use this article as I am fairly sure that there are better sources for this kind of information

How do you typically go about preparing for a writing assignment?
Usually I think about it a lot and let it fester, then if there is any research to be done I will do so. After that I will sit down and write out a outline/draft. Lastly I refine it and usually write our a conclusion then or an intro, depending on which one was giving me trouble.

When and where do your best ideas often come to you?
My best ideas for my writing come to me when I am in bed about to go to sleep or right when I wake up. Recalling them later tends to be quite a problem.

Where do you usually write? Are you usually alone and in a quiet place, or is there music, conversation, or other sound in the background?
I usually write at my desk, bed, or on the couch. If I can be alone and in a quiet place it will be at the desk, unfortunately young children don’t understand homework and tend to make a lot of noise and are always in need of something. So I find my studying and writing on the couch or right before bed in bed. There is almost always conversation either from kids screaming or watching TV. I cant block everything out but do okay with a lot of it.

What materials do you use? What do you find most and least helpful about your materials?
I usually use the basic materials notepad and pencil at first they are easy to haul around. I defiantly use pencils versus pens because I hate to scratch out mistakes I prefer to erase them. Then I transcribe it to a computer so I can fix errors easily and add things in and use the spell check. This also gives me an opportunity to read how it flows as I transcribe.

What audience do most assignments ask you to address? How much thought do you typically give your audience?
Recently the only things that I have been assigned that are even remotely close to what this is asking is church talks. I usually mole it over for about a week and then will sit down a couple days before and write it out. I usually give a lot of thought about the audience, about what there needs might be and things they might need to hear.

What strategies do you typically use to explore a topic?
Usually when I am thinking about it I do a lot of research online and in any books that I may have obtained on that particular topic. I may ask some people their opinions on the topic an obtain feedback for it.

How do you usually write a first draft? Do you finish in one sitting, or do you prefer to work in sections?
When I write I a draft I mostly just try to get everything I have been thinking bout on to paper. Usually I don’t have a intro unless I stumbled on a clever way to open. Mostly its just the body and then it really is not in a very good order I usually switch a lot of things around during this time. After I finish with all that I continue to mole over the conclusion I tend to have a very abrupt ending and I try to make it as smooth as possible.

How do you typically revise, and what do you pay most attention to as you revise?
I typically revise a day or so after I write up the draft so I have a fresh pair of eyes, I usually read it through and catch the small mistakes such as punctuation and misspelled words, and things written backwards. Then I read it looking at the content and how well it flows and if all the information that I have is included to my liking. Then I will read it out loud just as a last effort on punctuation and content flow.

If you get stuck while writing, what do you usually do to get moving again?
If I get stuck I usually get upset, but I will try to work on another idea till I can come back to my original one. If I get really stuck I will leave it for awhile and try to clear my mind and then go back with a fresh look.

What is most effective about your writing and your writing process?
Well I guess its most effective because it works for me and it has become a routine. Jotting down my ideas and doing a rough draft is probably the most effective because I can really take off from that and include many ideas, and mold to how I want it.

What about your writing and your writing process worries you? What specific steps can you take to address these worries?
The thing that worries me the most about my writing is if I am completing the assignment to the expectation of the instructor. I can try to calm these worries by finding out exactly what is expected without question. And keeping that in mind while writing and then making sure I have addressed everything that needed to be addressed before I finish it up.

What is your favorite part of your writing process- and why?
My favorite part has to be research because I get to look a lot of things up and get a lot of different information and then again I really like it when I finish it and have the satisfied sense of completion.

I don’t mind if someone says their opion on things saying something the instructor might disagree with is fine as long as the student does it in respectful way after all we are learning and teachers defiantly might not know everything. I disagree with the statement information should mostly come from books. a lot of research can be hands on or from the words by mouth we are doing a google research project and that mostly be coming from online by experience.
“You’re writing mostly for the instructor’ when you are in school it might seem like you might be writing for the instructor but they are only guide and teaching. You are writing to learn which is a choice you make and thus you are writing for yourself. From does matter quite a bit but content is most important I believe without content you really don’t have a paper. Though without form you might only have gibberish kind of like this exercise. I enjoy using my own writing in my own voice but I feel it is only appropriate in certain types of papers.

I disagree with the statement “pretty much everything you read in textbooks is true” mostly because last semester I took A&P and chemistry and found a lot of chemistry is based on theory which is not proven to be truth and allot of the problems had incorrect answers and in my anatomy class there was a lot of arguments on the truthfulness of certain statements . If textbooks were true facts that why do they keep getting revised even this book “the curious researcher” is a fifth edition . Must mean things need to be corrected or updated. Learning is a continuous thing that humans do throughout generations and we constantly are proving ideas obsolete.
